We all want to own a website someday or the other probably for our business, as an influencer, blogger, a third party affiliate website or maybe just for fun!
Often times we explore making our own websites by enrolling to some free website domains such as WordPress.com, Blogger, wix.com and many more. Its all good till here!
The moment we start exploring to make our website we realize our limitations and often wonder why did we even get into this! things get even more interesting when you purchase a domain and hosting and realize that after spending money that you can’t use the plugins and customize the website they way you want it! then there comes the themes, business email’s etc. So here i am going to share with you 5 important thing you need to know before you build a website yourself.
CHOOSE YOUR NICHE
You want to start by having a digital presence, the thought is good, but it needs to be more refined. You need to be sure on why is it that you want a website, what is it that you wish to represent? What problem do you wish to solve? and how do you plan to engage your subscribers, readers and other viewers who come to your website.
Often times, we start a website with an idea and end up with another, when things get tougher. The possibilities in building a website is endless, which means it completely depends on your interest. Let’s take an example, “We started as sales consulting and digital marketing organization, but we eventually realized that people want to solve their day to day business challenges and unfortunately business development or digital marketing isn’t one. The niche we turned to was to support individuals, freelancers, business owners and startups to make wise decisions if they are planning on cost efficiency, how would they manage to do it themselves. So in short we help the market leaders to make better decisions by adding our side of the story to their consideration.“
So you can start a website for blogging, promoting your business and services, business websites, photography websites, eCommerce websites, online services websites, resumes, influencer websites, product and portfolio websites etc.
SAY NO TO FREE WEBSITES
I am certain that many people would not agree with me, saying that its because i am trying to promote paid options, well that’s not true. I am certain that none of you have just had an idea of starting up a website one fine day, it definitely would have involved a lot of brainstorming and stress, for sure!
So if you have already invested such quality amount of time on thinking about your idea, that you believe is going to help the niche you wish to cater to, then a free website will destroy your dream in matter of minutes, you want to know how? because a free website does not have an identity and often times not even considered credible, I am sure that you yourself would not work or discuss a potential business opportunity with someone who can’t even afford to own a website.
BEST PLACE TO START
If you are new to website building and do not understand coding it is advisable to setup up a website with a pre-builder theme, like the ones WordPress.com, wix.com, Blogger.com offers. Lets keep this in mind if you are going to build the website yourself then always start with something easy, and must go for the cheapest plan. At least that is what i had done when i started, but do keep this in mind if you are fast learner, then the basic or premium plans in above mentioned website builders do have a lot of limitations, trust me that would seriously piss you off!
There are two important things you must know while setting up a website, i.e Domain Name and Hosting.
What is a domain name? and how do you choose one?
A domain name is basically the name of your business, blog or eCommerce website you plan to start. Now the most important thing that you need to keep in mind is that, every domain name is unique and can be picked once only by that i mean, that if you plan to set up a business website and you chose a name .i.e. (http://www.xyz.com) and mid way you decide to convert that into a blog which promotes a completely different service, then your pre selected or purchased domain name will give you a problem, as you cannot head-back and change the same like a theme.
What is a website hosting?
A web hosting service is basically a type of Internet hosting service which allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible and available via the World Wide Web. That is in short, a location where all unique credentials and digital assets of your organization is saved. A website can be purchased separately or from the same place where you buy a domain name. As you are building a website for the first time, always buy both the domain name and the website hosting from the same vendor as it would avoid a lot confusion, with respect to managing its CPanel.
DON’T BE A PRO IN THE FIRST GO
See you are making a website for the first time, so you are bound to make errors and mistakes, if you were me, you would have made some serious blunders as well.
If you are setting up a website for yourself then always go with a basic plan instead of a premium or a business plan, the most important reason is that you get to to explore some options and you also realize your limitations. By this i am not saying that you should not go for the premium or business plan. If that is what your business or profession demands, i highly recommend a business plan. Well i wished somebody would have told me that, when i purchased my first premium WordPress website, It was a complete waste of money, Why? because the first thing is that i didn’t have the CPanel Access, so you would not have an editor, if you do not have an editor you can do nothing, the worst is you have no access to plugins either!
So if you plan to start at least with WordPress, always go for the extremes. that is the lowest plan or the expensive plan. But there are better options as well, where in you can buy the hosting and domain form a Web Hosting Service Provider, and you can download the WordPress application through your hosting and use it from there.
IT TAKES TIME
Just because you are doing everything right does not mean, that your website would start grabbing attention from its niche users, here patience and continuity is the key. Its very important to understand the website designing, content designing, graphic designing, social media marketing, blogging, Vlogging are all different professions, which when you are building a website will be managed by you yourself. So please not that if you do not have the time to invest in this activity on a continuous basis patiently, then i would highly recommend that you should outsource this activity, and the let the professionals handle it.
